17 killed in Peru bus fall

A truck carrying schoolchildren home from a parade has fallen into a ravine in Peru’s Andes Mountains, killing 17 people and injuring 33, authorities said.

Five of the injured are in “grave condition” after the accident near the remote community of Cahuac, 160 miles north east of the capital, Lima, said hospital director Rosa Pascual.

Fifteen of the dead were pupils aged nine to 15.

The truck was returning from a flag day parade when it fell about 1,000ft into the ravine, said Huanuco governor Ruben Alva.

School director Yonel Espinoza said the children decided to get in the back of the truck because they wanted to avoid the 90-minute walk from the parade site back to Cahuac, where they lived.

Peru’s transport system is plagued by old vehicles and poor roads, often through mountainous regions, contributing to a high accident rate. According to the transport minister, 3,110 people died in road accidents in Peru in 2013.

11 killed, eight injured in road accident near Murree

Eleven passengers were killed while a dozen got multiple injuries when a Rawalpindi-bound passenger van plunged into a ravine at a Salgran, a picnic spot in Murree, on Sunday.

The bus, which was carrying 20 passengers from the hill town of Murree to Rawalpindi, lost traction on a slippery road amid rainfall, rolling on its side as it fell down a slope.

According to officials of Rescue 1122, a passenger van (LES 1923) coming from Rawalpindi with 25 people on board met an accident at Salgran, a famous tourist spot near Rawalpindi, and plunged into 150-meter deep ravine. As a result, as many as 11 passengers died at the spot while a dozen got multiple injuries, who were later shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Islamabad.

"Eleven passengers have been killed while a dozen got multiple injuries in the accident. The injured and dead bodies have been shifted to PIMS," In charge Rescue 1122 Rawalpindi told The Nation.

A spokesperson of PIMS also confirmed that 11 dead bodies were shifted to PIMS while 12 injured were admitted to the emergency ward.

Officials of Murree Police Station said rescue operation was over and initial investigations were on. The rescuers said the victims trapped in the wreckage of the wagon were pulled out after cutting the body of the vehicle.

"We will investigate thoroughly to sort out what had made the ill-fated van plunge into ravine," Muhammad Sohail, officer on duty at Murree Police Station, said when contacted. He did not rule out the possibility of bad weather causing the accident.

It is worthy of mentioning here that it was the second accident in the current year as on January 8, 2014, a dozen of passengers were killed when two passenger busses had collided with each other and plunged into ravine at the same spot of Salgran.

Since January 2013, more than 130 people have been killed or injured in 11 traffic accidents on the same spot at Salgran.

The popular hill resort Murree is situated around 50 kilometres northeast of Islamabad and attracts tourists from across the country.

Bus accidents are common on the mountainous track to the hill town because of careless driving and speeding.

However, after the latest accident, the residents of the area have criticised the local administration and the traffic police for their failure to check speeding and overloading by the public transporters which they said was the major cause of the increasing fatal accidents in the mountainous area.

Pakistan has one of the world's worst records for fatal traffic accidents, blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.

Kenya: 15 perish in Matatu crash at Nandi Hills

Fifteen people died in a road accident at Chebarus area of Nandi Hills town yesterday. Six sustained serious in- juries when the matatu plunged down a cliff at around 8am. Five of them were members of one family. They boarded the matatu at Langas estate in Eldoret town. They were travelling to their rural home at oyugis in Rachwonyo subcounty.

The vehicle belonging to Citizen Road Service plunged down the cliff, killing the driver and the conductor as well. The matatu was headed to Kisii. Nandi east police boss Patrick Macharia said the matatu was speeding and overloaded. It lost control at a corner near Chepsangor village.

Fourteen passengers died instantly while one succumbed to injuries at Nandi Hills district Hospital. Residents and volunteers from Kenya Red Cross assisted the police to retrieve the bodies. The bodies of 12 men and three women were taken to Nandi Hills district Hospital.

Macharia expressed shock at the accident. He said the driver may have failed to slow down at the sharp corner. Macharia was with Nandi deputy Governor Dominic Biwott. He said the corner is a sharp corner. "Drivers must exercise caution while driving," Biwott said.

Salgaa, located on the Nakuru-Eldoret road is one of the country’s black spots, with many road accidents occurring there.

Several accidents have occurred at the spot, the latest being on Saturday night when 12 members of the same family perished on their way back from a dowry-paying event.

“We are stressing the need to observe road safety regulations. That is what we are doing here at Salgaa,” Kimaru said. “Witnesses have told our officers that the (Kisii-bound) matatu was going down the hill at dangerously high speed.”

Biwott said a month ago, He said the road lacks signs and side barriers. "We appeal to the Kenya National Highways Highways Authority to put up road signs," Biwott said.

It was not immediately clear if the dead included people outside of the matatu.

Kenya’s road safety record is one of the worst with 3,200 people having been killed in road accidents in the country last year according to statistics from Traffic Police headquarters.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau has assured Kenyans he is determined to minimise road accident fatalities after initiating various measures – including the use of alcoblow – which aid police to identify and prosecute drunk drivers, both during the day and at night.

The government also imposed strict guidelines for night travel which many transport operators have failed to meet.

Fourteen people, including two foreign-tourists, were killed after a passenger bus from Manila fell into a 120-meter ravine in a mountainous area along the Banaue-Bontoc Road in sitio Paggang, Barangay Talubin in Bontoc town on Friday morning.

The crash happened in Bontoc, a resort town 280 kilometres (175 miles) north of Manila known for its mountainside rice terraces.

Thirty-one others were injured, said Police Provincial Director Oliver Enmodias.

Police reported that a Florida (TXT 872) passenger bus was negotiating a difficult part of the road in Bontoc town, near the boundary of Ifugao and Mountain Province when it plunged into the ravine.

The Office of Civil Defence said the bus from Manila had about 47 passengers on board. Fairlane Amungan, a provincial disaster response official, said authorities were still determining the exact number of people on the bus as they searched for more victims.

The bus came from its terminal in Sampaloc, Manila. The accident happened at around 7:20 a.m.

Supt. Ramir Saculles, Mt. Province deputy police director for Operations, said that most of the recovered bodies were mutilated due to the impact of the crash.

Fourteen of the passengers died on the spot including a Canadian and a Dutch national, he said.

Among the injured were a Dutch woman and the driver of the bus, who were taken to hospital, Enmodias added.

Local police spokesman Superintendent Davy Vicente Limmong said they suspect human error or a mechanical problem was the cause of the accident, as there was no traffic and the weather was clear

Saculles said that there is a possibility that the driver of the bus dosed off. He also mentioned that mechanical trouble could have also caused the accident.

Mt. Province Gov. Leonard Mayaen assured that the local government will do its best to be able to provide the needs of the victims.

7 dead after minibus plunges into ravine

A minibus transporting 13 tourists, believed to be Chinese, plunged into a 15-meter-deep ravine Monday after experiencing engine trouble on the narrow, treacherous road at Jl. Pantai Suluban, Pecatu in South Kuta.

As of 9 p.m., the local authorities had confirmed that seven people had been killed in the accident, including the driver, the tourist guide and five tourists. The number of fatalities is feared to rise since several passengers were still receiving intensive treatment in local hospitals.

Severely injured passengers were rushed to Kasih Ibu Hospital in Kedonganan; Bali International Medical Centre (BIMC) in Nusa Dua; Surya Husada Hospital in Siligita; and Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.

The police and hospitals have yet to release the identities of the victims. There was also contradictory information about the nationalities of the victims, with the police identifying them as Chinese, while the local chapter of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) stated they were Taiwanese. The driver is believed to be an Indonesian national, identified as Agus Bachtiar Usman.

The accident took place on Monday afternoon at around 2:45 p.m. local time. The minibus fell into a ravine near Blue Point Hotel on Jl. Pantai Suluban.

Bali Traffic Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Beno Lauhenapessy said that the minibus was moving along the main road that connects Padang Padang Beach with the famous Uluwatu Temple. It was reported that the group planned to visit the temple, which is perched on a cliff and was believed to be the enlightenment site of an influential 16th century Hindu sage.

At an uphill and angled section of the road, the minibus’ engine stuttered before suddenly dying out.

“The bus driver put the brakes on for several minutes. When the driver tried to turn on engine and move forward, it suddenly switched off again and the bus moved backward before plunging into a 15-meter-deep ravine,” Beno explained.

The locals and, later on, emergency crew from the Denpasar National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) scrambled to the accident site and had to navigate difficult terrain to evacuate the victims. It took them three hours to complete the task.

Police were still investigating the exact cause of the fatal accident. Beno said that the police had yet to make any conclusions about the cause of the accident. “We are still investigating the case, and we will surely investigate it in a thorough manner,” he said.

Beno added that the Bali Traffic Police would evaluate the safety signs and equipment installed on the accident-prone road.

“Since there has been an accident, we will improve the infrastructure on roads that are prone to accidents. It will include providing traffic signs to show all motorists that the road is dangerous,” Beno said.

Dudut Rustyadi, head of the forensic facility of Sanglah General Hospital, confirmed that the facility had received the bodies of all the fatalities.

“We will carry out a postmortem examination on all the victims once we receive an official notice from the police,” he said.

12 dead in Colombia bus accident

Twelve people were killed and 35 others injured Monday when a bus ran off the road and plunged 80 meters (262 feet) to the bottom of a ravine in southwestern Colombia, authorities said.

The vehicle was traveling along a highway between the towns of Toribio and Jambalo in Cauca province.

“The bus left Jambalo with at least 45 people, the majority of them Indians, who had participated in the festivities taking place here,” the town’s mayor, Silvio Dagua, told reporters.

Cauca Highway Police commander Maj. Richard Sanabria said that the injured were taken to several hospitals, some of them in Popayan, the regional capital.

Terrain difficulties and bad weather in the region have made the recovery of the bodies difficult, the police chief said.

“There are (groups) from Toribio and Jambalo trying to recover the bodies. We’re waiting for the weather to improve to perform an overflight and decide how to proceed,” Sanabria said.

Over the weekend there were two accidents with similar characteristics, the first in the northwestern province of Antioquia which left five people dead and 25 injured, and the other in the central region of Tolima which left four dead and 30 injured.
