No survivors found in Russian helicopter crash
All those on board the MI-8 helicopter that crashed in a mountainous region of far-eastern Russia are now known to have died, Russian officials said on Saturday.
“The bodies of all five who died have been found,” a local official with Russia’s Emergencies Ministry in the Khabarovsk Territory told RIA Novosti.
The MI-8 helicopter, which belonged to Russia’s Voluntary Association of Assistance to the Army, Air Force and Navy (DOSAAF), went missing on Thursday.
Reports earlier on Thursday said the helicopter, which belongs to DOSAAF, was flying from Tugur to Briakan when it failed to establish contact with air controllers at the designated time. The Mi-8 helicopter was reportedly carrying about three tons of fish.
It was carrying four crewmembers and one passenger. The crash site was identified early on Saturday morning.
According to a spokesman, the remains of the crashed helicopter were discovered from air during a rescue and search operation and the nearest detachment of rescuers set off to the detected crash scene.
It is not yet known what caused the crash.
